Philadelphia Student Wins Scholarship in International Music Competition

(Philadelphia, PA; December 10, 2024) The prestigious Philadelphia International Music Festival awarded over $50,000 in scholarships and performance opportunities this past year to young musicians who took top spots in PIMF’s Concerto Competitions, online and at its summer festivals.

Ian Lin, 15, of Philadelphia, PA, won Second Place in the Age 12-15 Division and was awarded a scholarship valued at $750 to PIMF’s intensive classical music training program featuring members of The Philadelphia Orchestra. He’s also invited to take part in the PIMF Winners Circle concert next summer with Philadelphia Orchestra players. Ian impressed the judges with the last movement of Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor, Op. 11.

“I think there’s a great deal of charm throughout this piece, and it’s very lighthearted in nature,” Ian explained. “This movement is vibrant and full of character, and it blends these moments of playfulness with technical finesse. I hope to bring out the strikingly Polish spirit of the music, through the Polish dances in this final movement, and share its sparkling energy with the audience.”

The Davidson Academy Online sophomore is not only a gifted pianist but excels on the violin: Ian is a first violinist in the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra.

“Music is at the heart of my life; it’s where I find my voice and express my emotions, as well as a way to share a part of who I am,” Ian said. “It’s not just a hobby or an interest; it’s woven into my daily routines and moments of joy, comfort, and even challenge. Playing and listening to music helps me make sense of the world and connect with people in a way that words can’t.”

Musicians in three age groups from 6 to 19 years of age submitted videos for the spring event from all over the world. PIMF’s Fall 2024 Virtual Concerto Competition is accepting submissions through December 31, 2024.

Young musicians interested in working with principal players and other members of the world-famous Philadelphia Orchestra can find a summer music home at The Philadelphia International Music Camp and Festival this year. Chat online for additional information at: pimf.org or phone: 856.875.6816.
