Davidson Academy Online Student Channing Y Named 2023 MATHCOUNTS National Champion

Channing Yang is presented with the 2023 Raytheon Technologies National Champion award by Bindu Nair, the director of basic research at the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense, his coach Andrea Smith, and Tracey Gray, MATHCOUNTS board chair and vice president of Communications and External Affairs for Raytheon Intelligence & Space.

After an exciting final matchup, Davidson Academy Online student Channing Y. was recently named a 2023 Raytheon Technologies MATHCOUNTS National Champion! A total of $40,000 in college scholarships was awarded to top competitors, including the $20,000 Donald G. Weinert Scholarship, awarded to Channing.

Channing, who represented the Texas state team and helped them win 1st place overall, won the Countdown Round by answering this question in 7 seconds: “Erika cuts one pound of fudge into pieces to share with her friends. She divides the fudge into seven small pieces and three large pieces. If each large piece is three times as large as each small piece, how many pounds does one of the large pieces weigh?”

A number of other DAO students (pictured below) also competed and placed at MATHCOUNTS 2023. Liam Reddy (NV) scored 4th place in the written competition and was also a quarterfinalist in the countdown round. Samuel Henderson (KY) placed #29 overall. Maxwell Tsai (NV) represented the NV state team with Liam Reddy and helped the NV team earn 9th place!
