Art – Principles of Design

Course Overview

This course is designed to provide a foundation of visual art concepts and allow for the exploration of these concepts. Students will learn about the eight principles of design in art (Balance, Proportion, Contrast, Emphasis, Unity, Pattern, Rhythm, and Movement) by participating in the seven artistic processes: Creating, Presenting, Producing, Performing, Responding, Critiquing, and Connecting. Students will explore a variety of art styles and media, such as, but not limited to, drawing, painting, digital art, sculpture, and mixed media. Students will review works related to each principle of design and understand the influence of artists on the world throughout history and among various cultures. Students will expand opportunities to express ideas through the visual arts by developing fundamental skills through experimentation with media and techniques used to create art. In addition to this, they will apply the conventions of Art Evaluation and Critique.
