Creative Writing
Course Overview
This semester-long Creative Writing course aims to give students the time, space, and tools necessary to put their innermost thoughts on paper; to share the characters, worlds, dialogues, and emotions that may otherwise be neglected; and to experiment with all the intricacies of language. Creative Writing may be a departure from more traditional academic courses as it allows for a great deal of autonomy, artistic license, and peer interaction. However, this course also focuses on developing effective syntax; identifying effective and ineffective elements of writing; appealing to specific audiences; organizing time and resources; and understanding the importance of constructive criticism and revision. Each of these skills exists outside the realm of Creative Writing and will transfer into students’ efforts in their core classes. Throughout the course, students will be exposed to a variety of literary genres, including flash fiction, various forms of poetry, children’s books, plays, and short stories.
